What is in a Moscow Mule?
A Moscow Mule usually contains vodka, ginger beer, and fresh lime juice. It is traditionally served in a copper mug or copper cup on the rocks with a lime garnish. Due to the popularity of the Moscow Mule cocktail, several variations have been created over the years, using different alcohols:
- Tequila for a Mexican Mule
- Spiced Rum for a Jamaican Mule
- Bourbon for a Kentucky Mule
- Champagne or Sparkling Wine for a Sparkling Mule
The recipe below is for the wine lover and uses sparkling wine, creating a Sparkling Moscow Mule.

Step 2:
Add Ice.

A Sparkling Moscow Mule doesn't need to served in a copper mug—in fact, it tastes good in any type of glass. Mules are also commonly served in a lowball glass or mason jar, but we think it's fun to break out the wine glasses when we want to take a break from the distinctively chilling nature of the copper mugs.
